Man, what a night we had bartending. Here are some photos. And a drink menu. That we actually used. So now you know why we all look so wasted. Don't miss this next time.

And now, here's Jonny (via shootthemessinger.com)
1. I was in Omaha last weekend, and I’m only now getting a chance to sit down and write about it. I sat on a panel about the future of literature, in which I engaged and defeated two older gentlemen in an argument about Wikipedia. They deserved it. And then we did a Dollar Store at the Lit Fest party, and I have to say, I think we triumphed over the audience as well. The only losing battle I waged was against the University of Nebraska football team, who dominated Omaha’s collective attention. I thought it was a joke that everyone in Nebraska watches football on Saturdays. Turns out, it’s no joke.
2. Tonight, if you’re not busy, swing by the Athenaeum Theatre in Chicago for Ian’s Dog & Pony Show. Ian Belknap, whom you may have seen delighting the August DS audience, has put together a pretty spectacular lineup tonight, including comedian Jimmy Carrane, the all-lady improv group Sirens and this guy. 9pm, $15 or pay what you can.
3. I’m still not really over this.
4. Booklist has posted an interview with me, with some pretty tough questions. It also means the review is now online.
5. The Third Coast Dollar Storey event at Steppenwolf couldn’t have been more fun. I was coughing like it was the 16th century, but man, we had a great crowd, interesting discussion of the audio pieces and one guy in the audience said, out of nowhere: “Nostalgia is the sweet wine with the nasty hangover.” It pretty much floored me.
6. I’m completely obsessed with Goodreads.
7. There’s a great write-up of Hiding Out in the Reader this week. There’s also a really nice piece on Literago about the release party.
8. I love the Hiding Out blurb in Chicago Mag this week. It’s not online, and it’s short, so I reproduce it here: “Jonathan Messinger, cohost of the local literature-meets-comedy hour Dollar Store, finds inspiration for this show from dollar store bookshelves. He brings this spirit of randomness to his debut collection of short stories, which is full of lonely, but endearing characters, including himself.” Zing!
9. Don’t forget about the release party, 9/27 at the Hideout.
10. I’m still in love with MC Lyte.

If you've ever wanted to catch two featherproof events in two separate states within the same day, now's your chance.
This weekend, stop by the featherproof table at the Renegade Craft Fair, on Division St. between Damen and Wood. We'll be representing with our good friends Switchback Books on both Saturday and Sunday. Make sure you check out all the great homemade clothing, and after you've wrapped yourself in screen-printed scarves, come to our table and check out some great homemade mini-books. Zach, Mark and Justin will be selling them by the bundle for all your mini-booking needs. We'll also have copies of Hiding Out and the infamous letterTee.
Then, if you're feeling ambitious, hop in your car and take a trip down to Omaha, NB, where Mr. Jonathan Messinger himself will throw the first ever Nebraskan Dollar Store. He'll be in town Friday and Saturday for the Omaha Lit Fest, and, well, when Jonathan goes to Omaha, you know he means business.
Make sure you're back in Chicago by Tuesday though, because that's when you can catch the whole Featherproof crew together at last at Irish Eyes, 2519 N Lincoln. Come grab a drink with us. We're great at publishing books, but you oughtta see us pretend to be bartenders.
If you can't make the Omaha portion, then at least check out this review and see what the Omaha World-Herald thinks of Hiding Out. Word on the street is that they'll be carrying Jonathan into town on a bed of palm leaves, chanting his oh-so-chantable name.
See you, in one town or the other, featherproof |

Hiding Out author Jonathan Messinger will be down in Birmingham, Alabama this Friday and Saturday, reading as part of the fine city's Art Walk. He'll be at the Omni Garage, 2309 1st Ave N at 7pm, reading alongside THE2NDHAND editor (and Sons of the Rapture author) Todd Dills and Nadria Tucker, winner of the mag's story contest, along with runner up T.J. Beitelman. On Saturday, he'll read as part of the Art Walk, so if you see a dude reading a story on a street corner who's not handling well the heat, give him a cool glass of lemonade.
Then Dills and Messinger are on to Atlanta, where they'll read at the famed A Capella Books, Sunday, September 9 at 7pm. The reading was selected as a Staff Pick by the Atlanta weekly Creative Loafing.
Even better news, to help promote the Atlanta reading, the hot-stuff Atlanta litblog Baby Got Books is running a little giveaway. Leave a comment on their post about the book, and you'll be entered into a drawing to win a free copy of Hiding Out. Then come on out to the reading and have Jonathan sign the copy. Why not? It's free. And if you don't like it, just have him sign it "To eBay."
