Welcome to featherproof

Today, THE2NDHAND has published "Containers," a story by Jonathan Messinger. This one actually isn't in Hiding Out, a thematic choice, really. But we like it nonetheless. Check it out. It's not so much an excerpt, more like a deleted scene.

Speaking of Hiding Out, we're getting ready to put this baby up on pre-order at the end of the month, so be on the lookout. Anyone who orders ahead of time will get a shot at all kinds of goodies and freebies. And Jonathan has sworn to write a letter to every single person who pre-orders his book, on the topic of the buyer's choosing. We're not joking.

Also, Zach's got a warning shot of an excerpt on the awesome new webzine thing: takethehandle.com, though we recommend checking out The Pizza Report instead.

More soon!

Thanks to everyone who stopped by our DEPART-ment table at the Pitchfork Music Festival this weekend, or our satellite office at the Flameshovel Records table. It was good to see you.

Though it's been just a few weeks since we announced the appointment of Molly Each as Featherproof's Head of Publicity—you may have heard about the ceremony on our yacht, the fireworks were visible from the Upper Peninsula—but that doesn't mean we're done. We'd like to announce the promotion of former featherweight Mark Byrne to Associate Editor, codename: Rogue Pawn. Mark brings some serious enthusiasm and ridiculous editing skills to the team, and we're happy to have him. Continuing our creative e-mail-assigning methods, you can contact him at mark[AT]featherproof.com.

Also, don't forget that Friday night is the Printers' Ball. It's in a very cool space (Zhou B. Arts Center), features very cool organizations (VenusZine, RUI, etc.) and is a party that includes some of the coolest people in the known universe (you, us, etc.). We'll all be there in our black ties and featherproof tees, and if you're one of the first 100 to show, you'll get one of these beauts for free! We spent three hours hand-screening them the other night. Zach slept on a featherproof bed:

You'll get one of those in addition to a mini-book/P-Ball program which features an excerpt from our forthcoming release, Hiding Out. Speaking of which, thanks to everyone who picked up a copy this weekend at Pitchfork. Though not out until October, we had a special pre-release sale for the fest and were thrilled by the way we couldn't keep the little guys on the shelves. The feedback so far has been tremendous, and if you're one of the folks who bought one, send us an e-mail at mail[AT]featherproof.com to let us know what you think. And if you weren't shopping in the DEPART-ment tent this weekend, but want a sneak peek at the book, check out a couple of readings Jonathan recently did over at the Same Title, Different Story podcast and Chicago Public Radio's Vocalo.

All that, and there's still more excitement to come in the next few weeks. Keep an ear peeled for big announcements from our little press. Thanks for your attention.

So, featherproof had a great weekend, collectively, in spite of the heat. Our theory holds that it followed our good ol' boy Todd Dills up from the South. If you joined us at The Dollar Store, or at THE2NDHAND reading at Quimby's, you know the reading was worth the weather.

The best summer ever has only just begun. This Wednesday, don't miss THE2NDHAND MIXTAPE: Stories About Songs. Hosted by THE2NDHAND's Chicago editor Jeb Gleason-Allured, lots of fine friends of the feather are in on this one. Plus, everyone gets a free THE2NDHAND MIXTAPE curated by the authors. Wow! That's Wednesday, July 11th, 8:30 PM at Ronny's, 2101 N. California. More info at THE2NDHAND.com

After that, we're gearing up for a big weekend at Pitchfork. You can find featherproof wares in the DEPART-ment tent, or on the Flameshovel table. Look for the free Flameshovel sampler featuring excerpts of Hiding Out and a super-secret 2008 project, expertly recorded by our sound engineer, John Huston and backed by actual talent Abraham Levitan and Love of Everything.

If you can't wait one more minute to hear Zach and Jonathan's melodious voices, then you can listen as featherproof takes the “fine” out of the great fine arts podcast Bad at Sports. Two of the Bad Athletes stopped by our Printers Row table for an interview. We had a blast. We start up around 36 minutes in, but recommend listening to the whole thing, the interview with photographer Jeff Wall is fairly badass: Give it a listen here.

Still can't get enough? My, you are voracious. Well, ok, this week Zach gets batty on THE2NDHAND. And Jonathan has a story up on the Same Title, Different Story podcast in the “To Have and Have Not” category. This is a slightly modified version of the story “Winged Attack” that’ll be in Hiding Out come October.

Did we mention we're exhausted? Maybe it's just the heat...
